THE SELKIRK REX BREED:

The Selkirk Rex has been bred from the only known example of a long-haired cat carrying the Rex gene. It is named after the Selkirk Mountains, an area just north of where the original breeding cats came from. "Rex" because the cat was curly, indicating a change in coat type that was similar curl to the Cornish and Devon Rex. It differs from other Rexes because the gene is dominant.

CHARACTERISTICS

The Selkirk Rex is a medium to large cat with a solid heavy boned body. The coat is soft, thick and medium length with loose curls that are most prominent around the neck and tail but they do extend down the legs.

Note the Selkirk coat, but then take a look at the whiskers. They are short, curly and not plentiful. Because the whiskers are curly and brittle, they do break off.

We have imported Mirkwood Magicurl Merlin of Loralei in 2003 with the intention of developing a strong breeding line. Merlin was ten months old when we brought him in. At 18 months he is still an extremely large 'cuddle bug'. I have found no aggression with other animals. He shows immense pleasure in being brushed and loved.

Merlin has sired two litters of kittens and we are thrilled with the results. These will not be available for sale at this point as we are building up our breeding stock. So, for the future, if you want a pet that is really different and won't be found in many homes, talk to us and we can contact you when stock is available.
